I received an email from a student asking me to pass on the information to all I know for their benefit. It seems a youth just 26 wanted to boil water and placed a cup of water into the microwave oven. When he opened the oven the water was not bubbling but when he brought it out of the oven, the water blew up on to his face causing severe burn injuries. He has problems in one of his eyes and the scar may remain forever.
The reason given by General Electric is that it is a phenomenon that most users of microwave overlook. No liquid should be heated for long. A cup may be allowed to stand for just two minutes at the maximum. The energy that gets built up remains passive until the liquid is moved or some other action like putting a tea bag in. That will make the liquid blow up with force.
Caution is advised in the use of such high-tech instruments.
To prevent
Never heat water in a microwave oven
Don’t heat any liquid for long – just two minutes for a cup full of water.
Better study the behavior of your machine and the heat it generates at various settings and decide the best method.
Immerse a wooden spoon or place a tea bag in water before you start microwaving.
Let the liquid stand for sometime inside the oven itself with doors closed. Open the door only after that and remove the container and then add anything like tea bag.
If you have a kettle, use it. (Both, electric or normal, are ok.)
NB:
A child recently suffered burn wounds because the mother was a bit careless while cooking (I don't think they were not using microwave)and the child was playing near by. The child was taken to hospital for treatment and the police took the parents into custody for being careless and for endangering the child. So better be careful while you cook.
Search the web: cooking, microwave
NB:
Yesterday I received the original email that is circulating and attached to that was a video of water suddendly spilling over on taking out of oven and something is added to it.
