The Black Hole - Darkness Visible

Bookmark and Share Digg!

A black hole is a very intensely concentrated celestial object. The news item found in Yahoo today on the powerful jet from black hole brings to fore the black hole again.

The dismal Situation waste and wilde,
A Dungeon horrible, on all sides round
As one great Furnace flam'd, yet from those flames
No light, but rather darkness visible
Serv'd onely to discover sights of woe
Paradise Lost Book I-John Milton

Merriam Webster describes a black hole as
a celestial object that has a gravitational field so strong that light cannot escape it and that is believed to be created especially in the collapse of a very massive star

It has so strong a gravitational field that everything gets attracted to it and including light nothing can escape from it. So it is dark mass, black as hell itself. It is a concentrated mass. The movements of other celestial objects and certain gases swirling inward toward that make their presence identified.

Space.com has an interesting video; Nasa has also tried to make things easy to understand here; go to the hubble site to learn more and also see their images through Google to make your tour complete.
