The Old Man of the Mountain

‘It was a happy lot for children to grow up to manhood or womanhood with the Great Stone Face before their eyes, for all the features were noble, and the expression was at once grand and sweet, as if it were the glow of a vast, warm heart, that embraced all mankind in its affections, and had room for more.’ From 'The Great Stone face' by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

This day in 2003, five years ago, his life came to an abrupt end.

He was the well known 'Old Man of the Mountain.' This old man has got emotionally mixed with the people of New Hampshire and became a house hold name. He is the state symbol. People who knew him still look up with some longing to see him there. This forty feet tall face formation was staring over the Profile Lake for long. He got imprinted in the hearts of the people and honored through the issue of stamp and coins.

If Nathaniel Hawthorne really had a successful scientist in Dr. Heidegger, he would have changed the Profile Lake into the Fountain of Youth to save The Old Man of the Mountain.
